About Special Olympics
Special Olympics St Albans (SOSA) is a charity that provides sports training for people of 8 years and upwards who have intellectual (learning) disabilities. SOSA caters for all levels and abilities, from those who have not tried any sport previously, to those who want to compete at a local, national or ultimately international level.
We are a branch under the umbrella of Special Olympics Great Britain and are a registered charity that also receives support and funding through Hertfordshire County Council. Whilst our focus is on sports, we also enjoy providing regular social events for the athletes and their families.
Special Olympics St Albans
SOSA aims to support athletes in building confidence, self-esteem and skill levels. This is done both within training sessions and also by competing against other athletes in local, regional and national Special Olympic Competitions.
We have weekly sessions in – Athletics, Boccia, Swimming, Equestrian and Netball. We also partner with local clubs to bring sessions in Football, Golf, Tag Rugby, Judo, Trampolining, Gymnastics and Dance.
Over 150 registered athletes are encouraged to train in any number of our weekly sessions.
We have had a presence at National Games as part of Eastern Region for many years and in 2015 SOSA were proud to send 5 athletes to the World Games in Los Angeles as part of the GB Team.
In 2019, we had another 7 Athletes attend the World Games in Abu Dhabi and they bought back a total of 9 Gold and 3 Silver Medals for the GB Team.
